No-Shop January, Week 3 Update

So, I didn’t buy the sweater. I honestly am very proud of myself for resisting extreme temptation, but I’ll wait until there is webstock (and as hopefully there will be some in March, it will be a true birthday present!)

I did have to purchase a new duvet last week, as ours (an old down duvet) finally gave up the ghost and shed more than half of its feathers in one fell swoop. Needless to say, it’s not really usable any longer, especially last week when our furnace was out of commission for two days!

Anyway! I feel as though I’m getting into the groove of this new habit, and it is surprising how much freer my life seems to be. It is true that I feel the urge to shop on occasion, but it’s fading more and more, and I’m able to focus on the things that I actually need to do instead of something I find pleasurable but leaves guilt in its wake. I’m hoping that by the end of the month I’ll have formed a much healthier relationship in regards to shopping, as well as a list of things that I actually do need, instead of a hodgepodge of things.

I’ve heard from a few readers that they are either joining the No-Shop January challenge, and from a few who are planning not to shop in February. I’d love to hear from you if you are participating now or plan to do so in the future! I may extend this challenge to myself for February as well. But we’ll see how next week goes 😀

  1. So I was inspired by your January challenge to try it in February. Decided to just go ahead and start this week. Instead of your exact rules, I gave myself a little budget for grace, but a much lower amount than I would normally spend in a month. I started a journal to help me keep track. Thanks for the inspiration!

Would love to know what you’re doing when the shopping urge strikes?

    1. Yay! I’m so glad that you are trying this, too. I think setting a lower budget is a great idea, and likely something that I’ll take on if I continue this challenge.

When the shopping urge strikes, admittedly much less frequently than usual, I try to use that urge productively–making a note of the item if it’s something I think I’ll need, and would like to purchase later on; working on blog posts; or thinking about what I would do with that money instead (most of my thoughts still going to upholstery projects! I’m going to have to do no-shop 2022 at the rate I’m thinking…) Eager to hear how your challenge goes, and good luck!!!

  2. I’m excited for you that your no-shop January is going so well! And I really hope you get that sweater in March! It sounds perfect. 🙂
